Accounting for ecommerce and retail

Quick answer

For ecommerce and retail clients we break down marketplace and payment settlements into sales, fees, refunds and reserves, keep inventory and cost of goods sold in line with stock reports, and prepare sales tax or GST data for your firm. Settlement clearing accounts are reconciled every month so revenue is recorded gross.

What we handle

  • Marketplace settlement reconciliations (Shopify, Amazon and others): each payout split into gross sales, marketplace fees, refunds, promotions and reserves, and matched to the bank.
  • Payment gateway reconciliations (Stripe, PayPal, Square): gross charges, gateway fees, refunds and chargebacks reconciled to payouts, so the clearing account clears every month.
  • Inventory and COGS journals from stock reports, with landed costs where the client tracks them.
  • Returns and refunds recorded against the right period.
  • Sales tax or GST data prepared for your firm to review and file.

Frequently asked questions

Which sales channels can you handle?
Shopify, Amazon, WooCommerce and other marketplaces and web stores, and payment gateways such as Stripe, PayPal and Square. We work from their settlement reports, or from tools such as A2X where the client uses them.
Do you file sales tax returns?
No. We prepare the sales tax or GST data from the books; your firm or the client files the returns.
