Flux analysis explained

Quick answer

Flux (fluctuation) analysis compares each account's balance with the prior period or budget, flags movements above an agreed threshold, such as 10 percent or a set dollar amount, and records an explanation for each. It catches missed accruals, mispostings and duplicates before financial statements go to the reader.

How to run one

  1. Pull the trial balance for this period and the comparison period.
  2. Calculate the change in amount and percentage for each account.
  3. Flag accounts above your threshold, for example 10 percent or USD 5,000, whichever applies.
  4. Investigate each flagged item and write a short explanation.
  5. Correct any errors found, then re-run.

Good explanations

A good explanation says what caused the movement and whether it is expected: “Hosting up 44 percent: new region launched in September; recurring.” A poor one restates the number: “Hosting increased.”
